Marbling on silk is more than a craft; it’s a tapestry of history stretching back to the 12th century. Spanning Persia, Türkiye, Italy, and India via ancient trade routes, this mesmerising art form has flowed through cultures like a living poem. Yet today, it teeters on the brink of extinction, earning a spot on the endangered crafts list. By choosing marbled silk, you aren’t merely purchasing a product—you’re championing a centuries-old tradition that resonates with humanity’s shared heritage. In doing so, you honour the meticulous skill of master artisans who pour heart and soul into each piece, keeping art and history vibrantly alive.
The Process
THE ESSENTIAL PREP: MORDANTING
Mordant Soak: Silk twill is first immersed in a mordant solution that helps the dye bond permanently to the fabric.
Air & Iron: Once soaked, the fabric is gently wrung, hung to dry, then lightly pressed to smooth out any creases.
This meticulous preparation ensures deep, lasting colour that won’t fade.
THE MAGIC MIX: MARBLING SIZE
Carrageenan Base: A blend of water and carrageenan (seaweed extract) forms the ‘size’—a viscous solution that holds the floating pigments.
Patience Is Key: The mixture sits for around 12 hours to rest, allowing bubbles to subside for a smooth marbling surface.
Precision Pour: Once the consistency is perfect, the size is carefully poured into a shallow tray, setting the stage for the next act of artistry.
BRINGING COLOUR TO LIFE
Pigment Application: Vivid inks or dyes are gently dropped onto the surface of the size.
Pattern Play: Using combs, styluses, or expert flicks of the wrist, swirling patterns emerge—no two designs will ever be the same.
Fabric Transfer: The prepared silk is laid flat on the design, capturing every unique whorl of pigment. It’s then hung to air-dry, further deepening and setting the colours.
THE FINAL FLOURISH
Curing for Vibrancy: For maximum intensity, the dyed silk rests unwashed for at least seven days, allowing the colours to fully bond.
Gentle Hand Wash: After curing, each piece is delicately washed to remove any leftover carrageenan or excess dye.
Sewn by Hand: The marbled silk is then carefully hand-sewn into the beautiful treasures that become our Marble Silk Scarves.
Like capturing a moment in time—once the design is lifted, it can never be recreated.
